Our Services: Kinesiology & Personal Training (in-home, studio or pool) Fitness Classes

Our exercise needs can change once we reach mid life and beyond. Age-related shifts in function, whether subtle or more pronounced, may leave you struggling to fit into mainstream fitness offerings.  Whether you are looking for the right level of class that still includes the latest trends, a Personal Trainer who understands your needs and goals, or need to work with a Clinical Kinesiologist or Gerokinesiolgist, we have you covered.  Our team consists of both medical and fitness professionals with research experience, advanced certifications, and specialization in the aging process. We utilize the latest evidence-based techniques in fitness for functional aging from your forties and beyond, to get you into the best shape possible, and back to being your best.

FALL CLASSES September to December, 2019

BROCK HOUSE SOCIETY, 3875 Point Grey Road

Class Title:  Balance, Posture & Strength

Description:  This mindful and engaging moderate level class will begin with a short low-impact cardiovascular segment focusing on agility and gait, followed by exercises to improve balance, strength, posture, and body alignment.  Class activities will emphasize coordinated movement and engagement of the correct muscles used in walking and balancing the body.

Day and Time:  Mondays and Wednesdays  8:30 -9:30 am Mondays FULL.  Drop in Available for Wednesdays only

Class Title:  Stretch and Strength

Description:  This fun and innovative moderate level class will focus on agility, mobility, stability, and strength.  Functional strength exercises will train your muscles to work together while emphasizing core stability.  Balance exercises will incorporate “Brain Muves” for both cognitive and sensory aspects of balance.  The last part of the class focuses on postural alignment exercises, active range of motion, stretching, imagery/visualization, and deep relaxation.  All exercises can be adapted for seated or standing.

Day and Time:  Mondays & Wednesdays 9:35-10:50 am Wednesdays FULL Drop-in Available Mondays only

Class Title:  Osteofit

Day and Time:  Thursdays, 12:15 – 1:15

Description:  Osteofit is designed and run by BC Women’s Hospital for individuals with osteoporosis, low bone density or who are at risk of falls and fractures.  This is a mild level exercise class suitable for new exercisers or those returning from illness or injury.  Participants should attend twice per week as recommended by Osteofit BC.

VANDUSEN BOTANICAL GARDENS, 5251 Oak Street, VanDusen Guides Classroom

Class Title: Brain & Body Workout for Boomers and Beyond

Description: This class, designed by Kinesiologists and Occupational Therapists, is an evidence-based program to improve both physical and brain conditioning. The first half of the class combines physical conditioning exercises (cardiovascular, balance, strength, coordination) with rhythm, creativity, memory, kinesthetic learning, and cognitive play.  The second half includes exercises for flexibility, core, posture, followed by visualization, meditation, and deep relaxation. Participants describe this class as “fun”, “exciting”, “refreshing” and “soothing”.

Class Title: Multi-sensory Movement Series

Description:  This 6-week exercise class series is designed to improve participants’ balance, strength, mobility and sensory integration through brain-based movements and sensory mindfulness techniques.  This series will begin with group benchmarks and will teach participants fundamentals of multi-sensory brain-based exercise throughout the series.   We will conclude with a progress review and exercises participants can do on their own.  For those who enjoy our Brain & Body class but desire to learn more, or for those who wish for a gentler paced class, this series is for you.

This class is suitable for Boomers and older participants who are fully mobile and not using walking assistance.

Day and Time:  TUESDAYS, 11:15 am -12:15 October 1 – November 5, 2019 (6 classes) PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED

Class Title: Balance and Strength Garden Walk

Description:  Enjoy a beautiful garden walk while also getting stronger and improving your balance.  This 60 minute moderate level class focuses on posture, strength, balance, cardiovascular fitness, and mobility.  Portable equipment such as tubing and Nordic poles will be provided.  Participants must be able to walk at a moderate pace for at least 30 minutes.  Class will begin from the lobby (near the gift shop) and will proceed rain or shine.  We expect good weather most days, however, please come dressed the weather.

Outdoor and Community Centre Classes

Brain & Balance

Level:  Adapted/Gentle

When:  TBA

Class Description:  This is a fun and engaging mostly seated class (with some standing as able) focusing on sensory interaction in balancing.  In addition, dual task exercises and strength exercises combine theatre sports/word play games, memory games and spatial & task planning exercises.  The last part of the class includes seated posture/mobility/stretching with visualizations, breathing practice, progressive relaxation, and a short meditation.
